According to BR One week ago, every Democratic congressman who serves on the U.S. Intelligence Committee signed a letter to President Obama demanding that classified documents regarding Russian influence into the 2016 presidential election be declassified and available for public view.
In the letter to the president, the group requested a classified briefing on the suspected Russian hacks that felled political organizations like the Democratic National Committee. They also pressed the White House for details on the WikiLeaks dump of emails from top political operatives and the “fake news stories produced and distributed with the intent to mislead American voters.”‘
The letter made available to the public was only two sentences long, but packed a punch.
‘We believe there is additional information concerning the Russian Government and the U.S. election that should be declassified and released to the public. We are conveying specifics through classified channels.’
Republican congressman serving on the committee were also invited to sign, but declined to do so. The only Republican so far to agree that Russia may have exhibited undue influence over the results of the election in a manner that deserves a full investigation is Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who offered to spearhead an investigation.
On Friday, one week after both the public and a classified letter was sent, President Obama responded by ordering the U.S. Intelligence Committee to conduct a full investigation into the 2016 presidential election. The president expects a report of the committee’s findings before he leaves office on Jan. 20, 2017.
