According to NCT a law professor claimed that Trump’s fraudulent activity could be grounds for immediate impeachment. Now, just a few weeks after that remark, another law professor is bringing forth a different argument. Steven Schooner, a law professor at George Washington University, says there is a high possibility that Trump could be impeached, particularly because his hotel in DC presents a massive conflict of interest.
Accordint to a recent Washington Post report, foreign diplomats are now feeling obligated to use Trump’s hotels when they visit. As one diplomat put it:
“Why wouldn’t I stay at his hotel blocks from the White House, so I can tell the new president, ‘I love your new hotel!’ Isn’t it rude to come to his city and say, ‘I am staying at your competitor?’”
Good point. Schooner raised this concern in an interview with MSNBC on Monday, when he wondered how Trump was possibly going to be President and run his businesses simultaneously. Bringing up the fact that Trump does business all over the world, Schooner said Trump might have an “impeachment issue because you have foreign states basically paying money to the Trump Organization by using their hotels.”
“The contract [with the General Services Administration] specifically says that no elected official of the United States government can share or benefit from the lease. It’s a 60 year lease with the GSA but the language is unequivocally clear.”
Schooner also pointed out that the contract Trump entered into so he could open his DC hotel was grounds for impeachment:
“The unequivocal message so far from the Trump Organization is that ethics, conflicts of interest … in terms of ethical behavior just don’t matter.”
Trump has made it pretty clear from the start of his presidential campaign that ethical behavior is something he doesn’t give a damn about, but to have a President-elect that could be impeached on so many different fronts is unprecendented and definitely a new low for America.
